Earth Day Reminder

Most People Have Never Heard of Community Solar

Community solar is one of the most impactful — and least known — clean energy programs available to New Mexico families. Surveys consistently show that the vast majority of Americans have never heard of it, even though it could save them money starting this month.

Here's the simple truth: you don't need to own a home, have good credit, or spend a single dollar upfront to go solar in New Mexico. Community solar lets any PNM, El Paso Electric, or Xcel Energy customer subscribe to a share of a local solar farm. The energy that share produces flows onto the grid, and your utility automatically credits your bill for it every month.

Solscribe exists to close that awareness gap — making it easy for every New Mexico family, especially renters and income-qualified households, to access clean energy savings they didn't know were available to them.

01

Check Your Eligibility

Confirm you receive a PNM, El Paso Electric, or Xcel Energy (SPS) electric bill at a New Mexico address. No credit check, no income requirement for standard enrollment.

Residential and small commercial customers qualify. Renters and homeowners both welcome. If you pay an electric bill, you're likely eligible.

02

Complete Your Subscription

Fill out Solscribe's 3-minute online enrollment form. Choose a subscription size based on your average monthly electric usage.

You'll need your utility account number and service address. Solscribe's team reviews your application and matches you to available capacity at the nearest solar farm.

03

Your Farm Generates Solar Energy

Each month, your share of the solar farm generates electricity that flows into the New Mexico grid.

Solscribe's 51 MW portfolio of 7 solar farms across New Mexico produces clean energy year-round. Your subscription is tied to a specific farm serving your utility territory.

04

Credits Appear on Your Bill

The energy your share produces is converted into bill credits that appear automatically on your monthly utility statement.

You don't need to do anything after enrollment. Credits are calculated by your utility and applied to your account each billing cycle. Most subscribers save 10–20% on their monthly bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is community solar?

Community solar allows New Mexico residents to benefit from solar energy without installing panels on their own property. Instead of owning or leasing rooftop solar, you subscribe to a share of a larger, ground-mounted solar farm. The energy your share produces is credited to your utility bill each month.

Is community solar regulated in New Mexico?

Yes. New Mexico's Community Solar Act (Senate Bill 84, 2021) established the community solar program and directed the Public Regulation Commission (PRC) to develop rules. Solscribe operates under PRC-approved rules and is authorized to serve PNM, El Paso Electric, and Xcel Energy customers.

How is this different from rooftop solar?

Rooftop solar requires you to own your home, have a suitable roof, and make a significant upfront investment or enter a long-term lease. Community solar has none of these requirements. Renters qualify, there's no installation, no maintenance, and no long-term commitment.

What happens if I move?

If you move within the same utility service territory, you can transfer your subscription to your new address. If you move outside the service territory, you can cancel your subscription without penalty.

Are there any fees or upfront costs?

No. Solscribe enrollment is free. There are no upfront costs, installation fees, or equipment purchases. You simply pay your regular utility bill, which is reduced by your solar credits each month.
